Excerpt from the Labyrinth Companion
The meadow was beautiful, but itâs not really magical, Nancy thought to herself. I wonder what Judy meant; sheâs not usually this far off-base. Nathan and Ariel were throwing a ball back and forth, Ralph was polishing off his fifth sâmore, and Nancy was putting away the last of the food when Brice called out, âLook! Down at the far end by the bushes. Thereâs a gate! Can I go take a look?â
âWeâll all go.â
Brice ran ahead of his family. As he approached the gate, he saw there was a sign on it: âTHIS WAY TO THE COMPANIONSâ LABYRINTH,â he announced as the others drew near.
âWhatâs a lab-e-rinth?â asked Ariel.
âItâs a maze!â cried Brice. âCâmon, letâs go!â
âWhatâs a maze?â asked Nathan, backing away.
âItâs a puzzle,â said Brice. âItâs got all kinds of twists and turns, and you have to find your way to the center without getting lost or stuck.â
âDonât want to get lost,â said Nathan as he backed even further away.
âWeâre not going to get lost,â said Nancy. âA labyrinth is a special kind of maze. It does have a lot of twists and turns, but there are no wrong ones; if you keep going on the path, you always get to the center.â
âWhatâs the point of that?â asked Brice. He stuck his hands in his pockets and started kicking at a rock.
âMaybe thereâs something special in the center?â Arielâs voice told everyone she longed for it to be so.
âMaybe,â Nancy said; âmaybe there is.â
âWhat?â asked Nathan as he tried to look through a knothole in the gate.
âI think weâll have to find out for ourselves.â Nancy looked at her husband. âWhat do you say?â
Ralph shrugged. âOkay. But who do you suppose the companions are?â
Nancy smiled. âAnother one of lifeâs mysteries..â
